THE STORY

A Banknote That Spent Decades Beneath the Atlantic

On the night of July 25, 1956, the Italian liner Andrea Doria collided with the Swedish liner Stockholm off Nantucket in heavy fog. A massive rescue followed as the mortally damaged liner listed sharply and sank the next morning.

This Silver Certificate has something unusually powerful: direct recovery provenance. Its original presentation holder records that it came from the ship’s first-class bank safe in 1984, after more than twenty-five years beneath the Atlantic.
